    Bursa's most important early-Ottoman mosque, built by Sultan Bayezid I in the 1390s and roofed by twenty domes set in four rows of five — the story goes that he vowed twenty mosques after a victory and built one mosque with twenty domes instead. At its centre a rare ablution fountain bubbles beneath an open skylight, ringed by walls of monumental calligraphy that have earned it the nickname 'museum of Islamic calligraphy'. It is an active place of worship, so the visit is timed around prayers and modest dress is needed to enter.

    Koza Han silk bazaar

    Opened in 1491 by Sultan Bayezid II, the 'cocoon inn' was built for the silk-cocoon traders of the old Silk Road and still hums with silk, scarves and textiles today. Its two galleried storeys wrap around a shaded courtyard with a tiny domed mosque at the centre, where locals sit over Turkish tea beneath the trees. It is a relaxed place to browse for a scarf or simply soak up the atmosphere between mosque visits.

    Commissioned by Sultan Mehmed I and finished around 1420, the Green Mosque takes its name from the deep green and turquoise tiles that line its interior — early masterwork that helped launch the great Ottoman tile tradition later perfected at İznik. Just uphill stands the Green Tomb, Mehmed I's turquoise-clad mausoleum and one of Bursa's signature sights, with views back over the city. Both are compact and easy to take in on a single unhurried stop.

    A pause to try Bursa's most famous dish, İskender kebab — thin slices of döner laid over pieces of pide and finished with tomato sauce and sizzling butter, invented right here in the city.     One of the longest cable-car lines in the world, the Uludağ gondola climbs some 8.8 kilometres up the mountain the ancients knew as the Mysian Olympus, rising to around 1,800 metres over roughly twenty minutes. The reward at the top is cool mountain air and a broad panorama over Bursa and the plain below; in winter this same slope is Turkey's best-known ski resort. The gondola runs most days but depends on weather and season, so your driver checks it is operating before we head up, and the ticket is paid on-site.

    A roughly 700-year-old Ottoman village on the lower slopes of Uludağ, Cumalıkızık forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage site marking the birth of the Ottoman Empire. Its steep cobbled lanes are lined with colourful stone-and-timber houses, many still lived in, and the village is loved for the generous traditional breakfast served at little courtyard tables. We add it when the day's timing allows, and a breakfast table can be reserved on request.
